#justiceOPportunity Thursday—February 11, 2021
Sr. Judy Lu McDonnell, OP
Ms. Lyn Kirkconnell
It’s #justiceOPportunity Thursday and we have chocolate—fair-trade chocolate—on our minds. As Valentine’s Day approaches, we are likely to look for gifts of chocolate for loved ones. We suggest that you keep in mind the child labor and child trafficking that could be behind some of the chocolate available for purchase on Valentine’s Day, and throughout the year.
Here are 3 websites for your perusal and action:
- A website that lists various companies that assure the purchaser that the chocolate they purchase is free of slave labor
https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/fair-trade-chocolate
- A website for Fair Trade chocolate that assures a person that they are purchasing chocolate grown and harvested by women
https://www.fairtradeamerica.org/shop-fairtrade/fairtrade-products/chocolate/
- An article from the Washington Post regarding child labor, including child trafficking, in the chocolate industry
