SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand Seminar: Engaging White Privilege—Courage and Skills Addressing White Racism
DESCRIPTION:Since 2020 the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael have been offering a special Gather@Grand program providing opportunities to explore systemic racism. We hope you will consider joining us this spring for a 2-day seminar: Engaging White Privilege—Courage and Skills Addressing White Racism. \n This in-person\, highly interactive\, seven-hour event focuses on two aspects of exploring and confronting societal racism in the United States: \n\nRecognizing the ubiquitous nature of institutional and structural racism. Every system from education to health care to law enforcement is rife with inherent disparities and injustices based on race.\nLearning tools and techniques to address the internal discomfort and the difficulties talking about race.\n\n These tools are surprisingly simple\, easy to learn\, and profoundly powerful for mitigating stress and anxiety\, allowing us to show up for anti-racism as well as other challenges\, bringing our courage and best judgment. These tools facilitate access to our best wisdom\, experience\, and intuition in the moment (i.e. in real-time). \n The presenters/ facilitators are Jennae Wallach\, Peace Educator and Public Health Consultant and Alanya Snyder\, Educator and Anti-racism Organizer. \n The workshop will be held in the afternoon on the weekend of March 12-13 from 1:30 to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. The arrival time is 1:15 pm on both days. Please register only if you can attend on both days for the full seven (7) hours of the course. \n Please Note: Class size is limited. \n Click here to REGISTER \n IMPORTANT NOTE – COVID-19 Precautions: \n This is the first in-person workshop the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael have scheduled since shelter-in-place started in March 2020. The Sisters and the trainers wish to meet at the Gather@Grand Gathering Space and absolutely want to protect the health of everyone involved. Please note and follow the precautions outlined below: \n\nAll participants are asked to be masked throughout the training hours in the training room\, the hallways\, and the restrooms. There will be scheduled breaks to step outdoors\, remove your masks\, have snacks\, etc. Please bring your own snacks.\nParticipants are asked to bring proof of vaccination and boosters to present when they first arrive on Saturday. Participants are encouraged to self-test if possible. If you suspect you have been exposed to COVID or are experiencing COVID symptoms\, please let Sister Barbara know that you will not be attending.\nDress warmly. The doors of the training room will be kept open to facilitate ventilation\, the heat will be turned on to keep the space at a comfortable temperature\, and an air filter will be placed around the room.\nThe trainers will self-test for COVID in the days immediately prior to the weekend and on both days of the workshop so that they can teach without masks and stand near each other. They will mask when talking to participants one-on-one.\nIf there is a surge in COVID\, the workshop will be shifted to an online forum via Zoom. If that scenario occurs\, participants will be notified of the change via email by March 10\, 2022.\n\n Thank you\, in advance\, for working with us\, being flexible\, and honoring everyone’s safety. We are very excited to provide this course and learn together. \n Read more about our Gather@Grand program here.

SUMMARY:G@G Virtual Film Discussion: White Savior Movies
DESCRIPTION:Two Films: Hidden Figures and To Kill a Mockingbird\n As we remember incidents of police brutality and the killings of Oscar Grant\, George Floyd\, and Breonna Taylor\, it’s worth reevaluating how the media we view has perpetuated racist stereotypes and historical inaccuracies while claiming to take on racism. \n We can’t keep sweeping issues of racism in America under the rug. Do Black lives really matter? It is time to confront our beliefs about racism. \n Our third discussion this season will focus on To Kill a Mockingbird & Hidden Figures on Thursday\, January 27\, 2022 \n DOWNLOAD STUDY GUIDE: White Savior Movie Study Guide 2B \n REGISTER: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eizjaeya4606c21a

SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand Virtual Film Discussion: Burden
DESCRIPTION:Burden\n Our second movie this season is Burden. Mike Burden was a Ku Klux Klan member who left the Klan\, eventually aligning himself with a Black minister he was once told to assassinate. Meanwhile\, Rev. Kennedy preaches a gospel of love from his pulpit. But notably\, he and his family soon find that loving one’s enemies becomes much more difficult when it becomes personal. It sounds too neat\, too crazy\, too scripted. But Mike Burden is real. This movie is a redemption story that doesn’t cut corners and or look for easy answers. It can be rented on Amazon\, Apple TV\, YouTube\, and Red Box. \nDOWNLOAD STUDY GUIDE\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:G@G Virtual Film Discussion: Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun?
DESCRIPTION:Gather@Grand Virtual Film Discussion for November 2021\n Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun? \n A documentary murder mystery about the filmmaker’s family\, set in lower Alabama\, 18 miles north of the Florida state line. On an October night in 1946\, S.E. Branch twice shot a man named Bill Spann in the small neighborhood market that Branch owned. Two days later\, Spann died in a segregated black hospital. Branch was white-a Klansman-and Spann was black. Branch claimed self-defense\, but despite that claim and the political climate in Dothan\, Alabama in 1946\, Branch was charged with first-degree murder. S.E. Branch was the artist’s great granddaddy\, on his mother’s side. Everyone says they looked alike. That this story echoes across decades and generations says much about the distance traveled by U.S. society since 1946. \n REGISTER \n DOWNLOAD STUDY GUIDE: Did You WonderStudy Guide \n   \n Confronting Racism—part of the 2021-22 Gather@Grand Program \n We will view a series of films exploring variously tendencies and resolves to sweep racism under the rug and also the courage and persistence to confront it\, with study and discussion questions provided by Ms. Linda Pete; the films can be viewed when convenient and then zoom sessions will be scheduled for those choosing to discuss issues in common. SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—The Power of Grace
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Sisters present “The Power of Grace\,” an in-person* morning of prayer and reflection\, on Saturday\, April 9\, 2022\, with presenter Sr. Joan King\, OP. \n The Power of Grace \n How can we describe the power and impact of grace? Our beloved God chooses to shower us with love each day of our lives. One significant way is through the gift of grace. Patterns of grace happen over and over in our lives. It is a constant movement drawing us closer to trusting God’s plan. \n During this morning of prayer\, we will look at seven stages of grace as we face some of the difficulties of life. As we proceed through our time together\, let us remember the words of the scripture\, “My grace is enough for you. In your weakness I am strong.” \n About Our Presenter \n Sr. Joan King\, OP has been a Dominican Sister since 1951 and has enjoyed a variety of ministries during those years. \n Sr. Joan spent the first two decades of ministry work in education teaching primarily at the high school level. It was during a sabbatical when she was studying spirituality at the GTU that she was introduced to the concept of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM)\, and the introduction was a profound experience for her. Ever since she has been focused on the process of drawing on the gift and power of the imagination. \n In the early 80s\, she developed a new ministry called Personal Growth Project which was a focus on days of prayer\, retreats\, and connecting spiritual companions. On these retreats\, she trained people in the GIM process with the belief that a steady practice could deepen one’s prayer life\, bring healing\, and create a closer union with God. \n REGISTER \n SCHEDULE \n 9:30 am Welcome \n 12:30 pm Closing \n Bring your own water bottle. \n Snacks will be provided. No lunch. \n \n No charge; donations are welcome. \n Questions? 415.453.8303 or communityrelations@sanrafaelop.org \n *Please bring proof of vaccination to event and wear a mask. SUMMARY:Gather as if @ Grand Film Discussion: Reconstruction-America After the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third in our Film Discussion Series as we explore the PBS Documentary: Reconstruction: America After the Civil War Revisited. \nFilms within the Gather as if @ Grand 2020 program\, Racism: Roots\, Resolves\, and Results\, have been curated by Ms. Linda Carter Pete\, who provides a study guide to all registrants in order to facilitate study\, reflection\, and conversation. \nMOVIE #3: PBS Documentary: Reconstruction: America After the Civil War Revisited (parts 1 & 2) \n ABOUT: Henry Louis Gates Jr. presents a vital new four-hour documentary series on Reconstruction: America After the Civil War. The series explores the transformative years following the American Civil War\, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss\, massive destruction\, and revolutionary social change. The twelve years that composed the post-war Reconstruction era (1865-77) witnessed a seismic shift in the meaning and makeup of our democracy\, with millions of former slaves and free black people seeking out their rightful place as equal citizens under the law. Though tragically short-lived\, this bold democratic experiment was\, in the words of W. E. B. Du Bois\, a ‘brief moment in the sun’ for African Americans\, when they could advance\, and achieve\, education\, exercise their right to vote\, and run for and win public office. \nWHEN: January 19\, 2021; 7–8:15 pm \nWHERE: Virtual Film Discussion on Zoom (details will be sent to all registrants). \nHOW: Ahead of the January 19 discussion event\, plan on viewing the movie through your streaming service. The film is available on YouTube. All registrants will be sent a study guide to facilitate your own reflection on the film and spark discussion. \nREGISTER: On Eventbrite \nDOWNLOAD: Film Study Guide—America After the Civil War… Reconstruction Pt 1 & 2 revised \n   \n ABOUT \n HOUR 1: The aftermath of the Civil War was bewildering\, exhilarating…and terrifying. African Americans had played a crucial role in saving the Union and now\, as the country grappled with the terms and implications of Reconstruction\, they struggled to breathe life into their hard-won freedom. The result was a second American Revolution. \n HOUR 2: Post-Civil War America was a new world. For African Americans living in the former Confederacy\, Reconstruction was what historian W. E. B. Du Bois once described as their “brief moment in the sun.” But support for the social\, economic\, and political gains they achieved didn’t last long. A controversial presidential election in 1876 deals Reconstruction a grievous blow\, as Southern states are “redeemed” and the forces of white supremacy are ascendant. \n   \n ABOUT THE STUDY GUIDE CREATOR: Born in Georgia and currently residing in the East Bay\, Linda Carter Pete’s formative years had her residing in Thailand\, Iran\, Okinawa\, Belgium\, and Germany as a military dependent for sixteen years before returning to Alexandria\, Virginia to finish high school. Kunta’s family is loyal to the Mandinka king and are resistant to the Europeans. This\, however\, means the Kinte family faces the danger of reprisal from the rival Koro family\, who trade African slaves for English guns. One day\, Kunta is taken off into the jungle with other young boys for manhood training. During a test in which Kunta must run through the jungle in a certain amount of time\, he sees a man’s dead body in a canoe. Kunta then sees the Koros in a separate boat\, hunting for vulnerable people to capture. Kunta reports this to his teachers\, who decide that it’s best for training to end. \n After a ceremony\, Kunta tells his father that he wants to go to university in another city\, to which his father disagrees. Kunta then runs off into the jungle\, where he meets up with his lover\, Jinna. However\, the two are then surrounded by the Koros\, who are looking to hold Kunta for ransom. However\, Kunta runs away\, killing one of the Koros in the process. He is then subdued\, and the Koros contemplate selling him to the English. \n Kunta and Jinna are sold to the Lord Ligonier\, a slave ship\, with other Mandinkas\, including Kunta’s uncle\, Silla. While boarding the ship\, Silla attempts to escape\, but is shot in the arm and restrained. Kunta and Silla are then chained in the brig of the ship with hundreds of other captives. One day\, Jinna tries to jump off the ship\, but is caught and taken to the captain\, possibly to be raped. This provokes the other captives\, and to prevent a mutiny\, the ship’s crew have Silla’s arm cut off\, not only because of it being infected by the gunshot\, but also to intimidate the other prisoners. Despite this\, Kunta is still able to start an uprising\, but it is suppressed\, and the captives are transported across the Atlantic Ocean to Annapolis\, Maryland\, where he is sold to John Reynolds (James Purefoy)\, who owns a tobacco plantation in Virginia. Kunta is renamed Toby\, and put under the care of a musician slave called Fiddler\, whose real name is Henry (Forest Whitaker). Throughout the months\, Kunta tries to adapt to life on the plantation\, but still thinks about escape. One night\, while singing a song from his homeland\, Fiddler reveals that he once heard his grandmother singing the same song\, implying that she was a Mandinka that was kidnapped from Africa. Kunta then is able to obtain a sharp object to cut the chains that restrain him. \n With the aid of Fiddler\, Kunta makes an escape attempt at Christmas\, but is caught and flogged by the cruel overseer Connelly (Tony Curran) until he says his name is Toby\, not Kunta Kinte. Kunta realizes that he will not be returning to his home in the Gambia. Fiddler tends to Kunta’s bloodied back and tells him to keep his true name inside\, no matter what the white men call him. \nABOUT THE STUDY GUIDE CREATOR: Born in Georgia and currently residing in the East Bay\, Linda Carter Pete’s formative years had her residing in Thailand\, Iran\, Okinawa\, Belgium\, and Germany as a military dependent for sixteen years before returning to Alexandria\, Virginia to finish high school. SUMMARY:Teilhard the Mystic: Exploring the Five Circles of the Divine Milieu
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by Santa Sabina Center and the Friends of the Dominican Sisters\nThis online morning of prayer and reflection focuses on French idealist philosopher and paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin whose life worked bridged the gulf between religion and science and whose mystical insights invite and inspire us even today. Sr. Ruth Droege\, OP\, will lead us in the exploration of Teilhard’s Mystical Milieu through her presentations and dialogue. \nTeilhard’s own experience taught him that “by means of all created things\, the divine assails us\, penetrates us\, and molds us…this world which we are prone to treat with boredom and disrespect…is\, in truth\, a holy place and we did not know it…come\, let us adore.” (The Divine Milieu\, p. 112) \nSr. Ruth Droege\, OP\, before entering the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael\, obtained a Ph.D. in Theology from St. Mary College\, Notre Dame\, Indiana\, in 1953. She taught at Dominican College (now Dominican University of California) until 1984. During that time\, she completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley. From 1984 to 2007\, she served as Director of Assessment at Southdown\, New Market in Ontario\, Canada\, an inpatient facility that provided treatment for religious. After retiring to San Rafael\, she has served as co-leader of the Teilhard Learning Group at Santa Sabina Retreat Center since 2016

SUMMARY:2020 Gather @ Grand Program Launch & Reception
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nGather@Grand—BACKGROUND \nNow entering its fifth year of vibrant programming and ministerial outreach\, the Gather@Grand speaker series offered by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael continues to present innovative and relevant content for a wide variety of guests and community members. Invitational by design Gather@Grand is meant to be just that—a community gathering in our beautiful Gathering Space—and a way for attendees to learn from and be inspired by a variety of speakers presenting on a wide range of topics. In our continued commitment to bring the Gospel to bear on the critical issues of our time\, the Dominican Sisters have put together an engaging line-up for 2020 that centers around one particular topic\, racism. \nPROGRAM LAUNCH & RECEPTION \nOver the next year\, we will unfold a series of presentations and discussions that will follow three separate but interrelated tracks on the topic of racism. We are hosting a Gather@Grand Program Launch & Reception on Tuesday\, March 24\, 2020\, from 7–8:30 pm in the Gathering Space. The evening will include a brief program that will provide some context for our theme of racism as well as an opportunity to meet and hear from the three presenters who will each facilitate one of the three tracks of exploration that will unfold in the months that follow. A schedule of subsequent meeting times for each track will be published soon\, but you will find a general overview below. At the end of the March 24 program\, there will be a Q&A followed by a reception with light refreshments and a chance to mingle and meet our presenters. You will be able to register for the sessions that appeal to you most. Registration will also be available online. \nKindly register using the link above as seats are limited. \nQuestions? Please call 415.453.8303 \n Dominican Sisters of San Rafael present \n 2020 Gather@Grand Speaker Series: RACISM: Roots\, Resolves\, Results \n“American democracy has never shed an undemocratic assumption present at its founding: that some people are inherently entitled to more power than others.” —Jamelle Bouie American Journalist & columnist for the New York Times \n Drawing inspiration from the New York Times Project 1619\, Gather@Grand will unfold in three sets of presentations: \n   \nSCHEDULE of EVENTS\nROOTS\n Presenter: Mick Chantler \n Historian\, Educator\, Lecturer \n Mick Chantler (M.A. History) has been a student and instructor of Early American Studies for more than forty years. He currently teaches at several Bay Area lifelong learning programs\, including Sonoma State University\, Dominican University\, UC Berkeley\, and University of Santa Clara. His primary interests include the Revolutionary and Civil War eras\, and he has also lectured on Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Mick is a member of several scholarly organizations including the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic\, the Lincoln Forum\, and the Society for American Baseball Research. \n Overview: By revisiting key moments and figures in U.S. history over the course of seven gatherings\, Mr. Chantler will demonstrate the presence of racism and how it played powerfully in events as participants begin to learn to recognize the long-lasting impact that permeates to our present day. Come to one session or all seven\, these presentations are designed to provide context and background that we hope you find thought-provoking and useful in exploring the topic of racism throughout our 2020 program. \nOver the course of seven sessions\, attendees will revisit and re-examine key moments in American race relations through the following presentation topics: The Founding Fathers and Slavery\, George Washington; The Founding Fathers and SLavery\, Thomas Jefferson; The Expansion of Slavery\, The Rise of “King Cotton”; The Dred Scott Case\, Racism Enshrined in the Law; Lincoln’s Decision to Emancipate; and Reconstruction and Race—A Window of Opportunity Abruptly Closes. \n GATHERING DATES: \n Tuesdays from 7–8:30 pm \n April 28\, May 26\, June 16\, July 7\, July 28\, September 8\, September 29 \n Come to one evening\, or come to all. Register at www.sanrafaelop.eventbrite.com \n   \nRESOLVES\n Facilitator: Rochelle Edwards \n Founder of the Transformative Justice Institute \n Rochelle Edwards\, Founder of the Transformative Justice Institute a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization\, is a psychotherapist\, restorative justice practitioner\, trauma-informed care specialist\, visionary\, baker and peacemaker. She integrates twenty years of experience working in the criminal justice system and three decades of work as a humanistic psychotherapist. \n Overview: The small group format (limited to 12-15) provides a unique opportunity to examine and work with the phenomenon of white privilege while being guided by a facilitator. The aim of these sessions (seven 90-minute sessions and one 4-hour session is to engage in restorative work while exploring the societal occurrence of those who have unwittingly gained position while others have been denied based on the color of their skin. Those interested in this format must commit to the entire schedule for the section since the group facilitation relies on the consistency of attendees. \nIn this small group\, attendees will discuss the topic of systemic racism and white privilege. For life-long learners\, re-examining concepts of learned racism is an ongoing process\, and it is a personal responsibility to educate oneself and understand this conditioning. By gathering and sharing experiences with others in a circle of safety\, inclusion\, and compassion\, participants can begin to identify their own cultural conditioning and to break down barriers\, a process leading to learning and transformation. \n REQUIREMENTS: Because of the unique structure of these facilitated small groups\, a commitment to attend all seven sessions is necessary for proper impact. \n   \n GATHERING DATES: \n 7 Mondays from 7–8:30 pm \n Exact dates to be determined by the people who sign up to be in this group after the March 24 event. \n   \nRESULTS\nFilm Guide Designer and Discussion Leader: Nnekay FitzClarke\, M.L.I.S \, Reference and Instruction Librarian\, Dominican University\n Nnekay FitzClarke graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a BA in English in 2005\, and a Master’s in Library and Information Science from San Jose State in 2007. She has worked in various aspects of librarianship including the Oakland Public Library\, Mills College\, various Community Colleges around the SF Bay Area\, and as the Head Librarian at St. Ignatius College Prep. She currently is a Reference and Instructional Librarian at Dominican University\, where she also serves as Co-Chair for the Diversity Action Group on campus. Outside of librarianship Nnekay writes for the comedy group Nice Tan and co-created and sometimes hosts the podcast Minority Korner. \n Overview: Using the genre of film\, this program explores themes of racism as portrayed in movies. A carefully curated list of seven films will be provided for viewing in advance of a scheduled corresponding gathering that will include a brief presentation with highlights of a couple of specific clips from the film meant to stimulate discussion and further dialogue. Join in one\, some\, or all as you journey toward a deeper understanding. \nThe films selected are intended to spark deep discussion and help further the understanding of the 1619 Project and the climate of our country as a whole. Through these films guests will not only get a sense of the African Diaspora but also how slavery has affected and continues to impact our society. Along with the films\, guests will receive film titles and discussion points to help unpack and connect ideas\, emotions\, and experiences with concepts introduced through the other modules of this project. Through viewing and discussing these films guests will be able to establish connections with the other two modules (Roots and Resolves) and hopefully understand the root causes of the issues that affect us today. \n REQUIREMENTS: Attendees will be required to pre-screen films\, which will be made available in advance. Only clips will be shown at the Gathering so as to spur discussion. \n GATHERING DATES: \n Wednesdays from 7–8:30 pm \n April 29\, May 20\, June 24\, July 29\, August 19\, September 23\, October 28 \n Come to one evening\, or come to all.
