SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Three Bible Short Stories… Scriptured
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Gather@Grand Winter Quarter Series: Three Bible Short Stories… Scriptured! \nThe Winter Quarter will be presented in three parts and explored over three sessions each. Our first session begins on December 3\, 2025. \nWhat stories? The stories we will read are in every Bible\, same words.\nBut here’s how we will customize them: \nAdam and Eve (Genesis 1-4): What seems to start well goes badly awry\, and we need to understand what is available to us from a careful\, creative\, and critical consideration of what is actually two stories of these ancestors of us (not just Adam and Eve but their children as well). What are the claims about the origins of all that exists? How to gain insight without needing to attribute shame or blame? \nDecember 3\, 10\, 17 \nWednesdays early evening: 7 – 8:15 p.m. \nREGISTRATION \n\nRegister for December 10\nRegister for December 17\n\nSAVE THE DATE: \nJonah: Suppose God gives us a life experience we really do not want and are not enjoying\, even have tried to avoid. How might pushback work (ours and God’s)\, and how might we learn even from adventures we would rather not have had (at least while in the midst of them)—while appreciating them more later? \nJanuary 5\, 12\, 26 Monday afternoons: 3 – 4:15 p.m. \nRuth: Suppose we find ourselves in the middle of a set of situations we would never have chosen but can see that there are silver linings to them\, if we can shift our mood or interpretive framework a bit? What’s available? How do these characters show us how a “quarter-turn” works? \nFebruary 2\, 9\, 23 Monday afternoons 3 – 4:15 p.m. \nNOTE: \n\nThere is a Zoom option available.\nFeel free to invite others—please register them or ask them to register.

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Befriending Trees 11.21.25
DESCRIPTION:Session 6 and final (need not attend all) REGISTER \nWe will learn more about trees and ways to engage with them more intimately\, guided by Pope Francis’s insights about integral ecology. \nWhen/Where \n\n10 am — 12 pm\nThe Gathering Space at 1520 Grand Ave\, San Rafael\, CA 94901\n\nThe Basic Plan \nYou are invited to a set of six discussion/action sessions to learn more about our particular connectivity\, to gain a deeper understanding of trees\, and to engage with some local trees in practical ways—including discovering and marking their common names (for others to appreciate). \nThe regular format will include an hour or so of discussion about trees\, stimulated by our common reading of Peter Wohlleben’s informative and engaging book\, Can You Hear the Trees Talking? (2019) or his Hidden Life of Trees (2016). We will spend some time outdoors on the Convent campus (or perhaps you will do so in your own garden)\, coming to grips with our relationship with these other creatures more nearly and dearly. \nThis engagement will help us know and befriend trees at a deeper level. Our main quest is to better understand and more deeply inhabit the tree-filled world\, the larger universe\, and our human existence amid those spaces. Our practical outcome is to begin to place nametags at the base of trees on the Convent grounds. \nRegistration \n\nPlease register online\nYou need not attend all 6 sessions. Register for the ones you can attend.\nThere is a Zoom option for the discussion portion of the session—not the field work. SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Friends of the Sisters with Sr. Christina Atienza
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nWho Do You Say That I Am? An Introduction to Catholic Christology \nABOUT: This introduction to Christology presentation invites participants to deepen their understanding of Jesus Christ in the faith of the Roman Catholic Church. Beginning with prayer and the Gospel question\, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:13-17)\, we will explore the Church’s reflection on the person of Jesus Christ\, drawing from Scripture\, Tradition\, and the Magisterium. The presentation traces the historical and theological development of Christology\, key Church Councils\, and the rejection of heresies to clarify Catholic teaching on Christ’s full divinity and humanity. Approaches such as “from above” and “from below” will be examined\, alongside scriptural portraits\, doctrinal definitions\, and contemporary perspectives from diverse cultures and contexts. The aim is to enrich personal faith\, sharpen theological literacy\, and inspire evangelization\, affirming Jesus Christ as the heart of Christian life and mission. The session will include time for reflection\, dialogue\, and sharing. \nAbout the Presenter: \nSr. Christina Atienza\, OP: Sister Christina serves on the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. She has taught the Christian tradition\, Catholic theology\, and Christology at Santa Clara University and interreligious learning at the Graduate Theological Union and lectured on various topics in religion at Dominican University of California. She earned her Ph.D. in Theology\, with an emphasis on comparative Buddhist-Christian theology\, from the Graduate Theological Union. She is originally from the Philippines and immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in her late teens. Before becoming a Sister\, she enjoyed a long career as a civil engineer and transportation planner. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Befriending Trees 9.26.25
DESCRIPTION:Session 2 (need not attend all) REGISTER \nWe will learn more about trees and ways to engage with them more intimately\, guided by Pope Francis’s insights about integral ecology. \nWhen/Where \n\nSeptember 12\, 26; October 10\, 24; November 7\, 21\n10 am — 12 pm\nThe Gathering Space at 1520 Grand Ave\, San Rafael\, CA 94901\n\nThe Basic Plan \nYou are invited to a set of six discussion/action sessions to learn afresh our particular connectivity\, to know about trees better than we do already\, to engage some local trees in practical ways—including discovering and marking their common names (for others to appreciate). \nThe regular format will include an hour or so of discussion about trees\, stimulated by our common reading of Peter Wohlleben’s basic but informative Can You Hear the Trees Talking? SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nAbout: So many conversations these days reflect a sense of distress and concern. We find ourselves in one of those tumultuous times in human history. We would like to know the security of solid ground beneath our feet! Yet our faith points us\, not toward certainty\, security\, and safety\, but to developing the ability to stand in the ebb and flow of the tides of life without giving up. In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians\, he writes: “When the day of terror comes\, may you be able to stand your ground\, and after you have done everything\, to stand. We will look at teachings from both Christian and Buddhist traditions that encourage us to experience a grounding that goes beyond our lack of footing. \nAbout the Presenter \nSr. Patricia Farrell\, OP \nSister Pat is presently the Resident Manager of our Rose Court affordable housing apartments in San Francisco. She has served the congregation as Hosting Manager at Santa Sabina Center\, our retreat center\, and in congregational leadership. She also served the larger family of Dominican sisters in the U.S. as the Executive Director of the Dominican Sisters Conference. Sister Pat is a Zen teacher and enjoys sharing how Zen and Christianity complement each other. \nSCHEDULE \n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—1:15 pm Presentation \nBring your own water bottle. SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—with Sr. Cyndie Cammack
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nLet’s talk about the ‘taboo’ topic of death—including planning for it\, being with others in this time\, resource sharing\, and sharing of stories. Death is a reality in our lives. We all have a terminal disease; it is called life. We are born to live until we die. None of us will get out of this life alive. Bummer huh… Not so fast. Perhaps it is the unknown of it that keeps us from wanting to talk about it. Or the finality of it. Our faith tells us that death in this life is not the end of the story. Since death is an inevitable part of life; let’s plan for it. How can we help someone else? Death is as personal as life – often how someone was in life is how they are in death. We will have resources available to complete needed forms and decision-making guides. \nSCHEDULE\n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—1:15 pm Presentation/Resource Sharing \nBring your own water bottle. Snacks will be provided. No lunch. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nSr. Cyndie Cammack\, OP\, RN\, CNS\, MSN Sr. Cyndie has been a registered nurse for over 35 years. She has worked primarily in the areas of public health\, school health\, case management\, Hospice\, Home Health\, and Palliative Care. She recently left By the Bay Health to become a part of the leadership team for the Dominican Sisters where she spent the last 15 years in Palliative and Hospice Care with forays into Home Health\, also working as a visiting Nurse\, nursing education specialist\, and most recently with their electronic medical record interfacing with all staff in all programs and with the quality department.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—Be a Voice for Synodality
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eka9weldef49b420 \n The Synod on Synodality is a three-year process of listening and dialogue that began on October 9\, 2021\, and will continue into October 2024 and beyond. Pope Francis challenges us to pursue “ this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey\, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council\, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made\, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion\, to achieve participation\, to open Herself to mission.” The process continues. Pope Francis invites each of us to continue the process in preparation for October 2024. We are inviting you\, our friends to join the Dominican Sisters on March 23 to share your ideas\, visions\, and dreams for church. The day will begin with hospitality at 9:00 am and will continue with conversations in the Spirit and will conclude near 1:00 pm. The Dominican Sisters of San Rafael and the Friends of the Sisters Committee invite you to come and “Be a voice for Synodality.” \n No charge; donations welcome. www.sanrafaelop.org/get-involved/ways-to-give \n Questions? 415.453.8303 or communityrelations@sanrafaelop.org \n REGISTER http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eka9weldef49b420

SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand: Complexities of Color
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n In-Person or via Zoom! \n A special presentation on how whiteness has shaped the humanity of white people and distorted the national promise of liberty\, freedom\, and equal opportunity. \n In this Gather@Grand learn-in/teach-in\, participants and presenters will come to clarity on what it means that whiteness is constructed (rather than natural); that the ascendancy of color-prejudice can be discerned early in the long story of North America (and re-inscribed often); and that the choice to first see and then resist racism can be made. Come away with ideas as to how to respond. The featured guest speaker (via Zoom and shown on the big screen) is Dr. Jacqueline Battalora of St. Xavier University (Chicago). Others who have been active in the various anti-racism programs of Gather@Grand will assist. \n coffee/tea/decaf provided; no charge; \n Kindly register at https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/9ajgrmb

SUMMARY:G@G Lincoln Lectures: The Fiery Trial”—The Evolution of Lincoln’s Thoughts on Race and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n 10:30-noon\n The Gathering Space \n Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n The Fiery Trial”—The Evolution of Lincoln’s Thoughts on Race and Democracy\n Lincoln came of age at a time when Americans’ attitudes on race and slavery were hardening. In the early days of the Republic\, there was hope that these social and economic issues could be solved in time. But as the decades rolled on\, that no longer seemed possible. Lincoln had to overcome a general cultural consensus that African Americans could not live in our country as equals. We will trace the course of Lincoln’s thinking on these knotty problems\, and see how he managed to extricate his mind—to a significant extent at least—from the seemingly hopeless dead end on the subject that the country had come to by 1840.

SUMMARY:G@G Guided Discussion #4 (Option B)
DESCRIPTION:Guided Discussion via Zoom/in-person (Option B) \n REGISTER \n Option B will be different than in past iterations. The group assembling will be guided by a new study of Martin Luther King: To Shape A New World: Essays on the Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, edited by Tommie Shelby and Brandon M. Terry. Terry was interviewed recently by Ezra Klein in a podcast presentation. This set of four in-person or Zoom sessions centering around the podcast and the MLK legacy will invite serious study of these materials\, to help us understand afresh the role of King in the racism and civil rights struggle of his own era\, to investigate what he has to contribute to the present moment\, and to appreciate his contribution to nonviolence and religion-based ethics. We will have the expertise of Klein and Shelby/Terry but will also do our own discussion of their views as well. The basic outcome of the whole study will be 25 or so new and communicable insights regarding MLK on both anti-Black racism and nonviolence in general (theory and practice)\, generated among participants and offered for group consumption. Those who would like to take responsibility to investigate and offer one of these points will be welcomed. \n\nThe sessions will be late in the afternoon on four Mondays (Sept 11\, 25\, Oct 2\, 16: 4-5:30 pm)\n75-minute sessions with participants either present or zooming in.\n\n REGISTER

November 1 & 15\, 2023\n 10:30-noon\n The Gathering Space \n Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n Lincoln’s Journey: From the Backwoods to the White House\n In our first talk\, we will discuss the unlikely origins and spiritual/intellectual development of the man who would eventually come to be known as “The Great Emancipator.” How did this poverty-stricken southerner (yes\, the greatest Yankee of them all was raised in Kentucky\, a slave state!) rise above his environment to eventually strike the blow that ended our national curse of slavery.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters: What One Woman Can Do
DESCRIPTION:A Morning of Prayer & Reflection with the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael \n REGISTER \n About: \n Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most important women of the twentieth century. She advocated for social justice and was a “friend of the underdog.” For her\, civil liberties and civil rights were the cornerstones of American democracy; among her causes were women\, Blacks\, youth\, the poor\, and the unemployed. Her life and activity were based on two Biblical quotes: one from the prophet Micah: “What does the Lord require of you?…To love justice\, to act mercifully\, and to walk humbly with your God” and the other from Matthew quoting Jesus: “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren\, you do to me.” This morning session we will delve into what and how Eleanor Roosevelt transformed traditional roles and took on political and reform work. She was the niece of one President Roosevelt and the wife of another. She was also a writer\, columnist\, and public speaker. As a U.S. delegate to the U.N.\, she was responsible for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). \n About the Presenter: \n Sr. M. Patricia Dougherty\, OP is a Dominican Sister of San Rafael and Professor Emerita of History at the Dominican University of California where she received her BA in 1967. She taught elementary school for ten years before earning her MA and Ph.D. in Modern European History at Georgetown University. She began college teaching in 1984 and retired in 1916. She taught a variety of courses on Europe (medieval to present) and women in the U.S. and Europe; she occasionally teaches an OLLI or college class. She has led short travel abroad study trips. Since 1996\, she has co-led a study abroad trip to France for faculty\, staff\, and students from Dominican institutions of higher education. She likes to walk\, practice yoga\, garden\, solve puzzles\, and read. \n   \n Schedule of the Day \n 9:30 am Welcome \n 12:30 pm Closing \n Bring your own water bottle. Snacks will be provided.
