SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Abel and Cain: Repentance\, Repair\, Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:What: Opportunity to engage deeply with the Jewish and Christian processes of repentance\, repair\, and reconciliation in situations where significant wrong has occurred—whether between individuals or between or among larger groups of people. Jewish scholar Moses Maimonides (12th century) will guide us with his insights. \nWho: There are two ways for anyone to participate: more active\, by being part of a small group who meets in person\, discusses and strategizes issues together online\, and is recorded; less active\, by watching the group (live or the later recording) and implementing insights on their own. \nHow: We will read\, study\, and discuss Danya Ruttenberg’s On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World (Boston: Beacon Press\, 2022)\, which explores various situations (smaller to larger\, private to public\, past to recent) where human beings have inflicted and suffered serious wrong at each other’s hands; we will also investigate ways in which amends and healing can happen—or may not. The small “live” group gathered for the sessions will engage together and share insights\, recorded for those who wish to use them “off-line.” \nWhy: to manage past injustices and hurts we have sustained and inflicted in hopes of assisting the healing process. Old wrongs consume a lot of energy\, needlessly. \nDates: Sept. 7\, 21; Oct. 5\, 19; Nov. 2\, 16\, 30\, 2026 \nFormat: active\, in-person\, small-group participation. \nZoom is offered to observe the class live (no interaction); or watch a recording on your own for quiet reflection. \nLocation: Dominican Sisters of San Rafael\, 1520 Grand Ave.\, Administration Building Large Conference Room\, San Rafael\, CA 94901 & Virtual \nOrganizer: Sr. Barbara Green\, OP \n\nRegistration link for Mon. SUMMARY:Gather@Grand—Friends of the Sisters: The Gospel Truth About Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The Gospel Truth About Christmas: Exploring the Canonical Infancy Accounts\n \nREGISTER \nAbout: The canonical infancy Gospels refer to the accounts of Jesus’s early life found in the New Testament—specifically the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. While the Gospels focus heavily on Jesus’s adult ministry\, death\, and resurrection\, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke offer glimpses into his origins. In this presentation\, we will explore the uniqueness of each account and how these canonical texts bridge the gap between the Hebrew Scriptures and Jesus. We will also explore the distinctive elements of each story. \nWe will look at the theological implications and how they inform and are informed by the rest of the Gospels. By examining these foundational accounts\, we can better establish how the earliest Christian writers understood who Jesus was from the very beginning of his story. \nAbout the Presenter\, Sr. Adele Gerlach\, OP: Sr. Adele Gerlach has been a Dominican Sister of San Rafael since 1955. She has dedicated her life to education  and faith formation. Sr. Adele has served in various ministries\, primarily in education over the last 60 years. She has concentrated her efforts on Adult Faith Formation during the last 30 years. She holds a Master’s in Spirituality from the University of San Francisco. Her burning desire is to share scripture with those who hunger to nourish their lives on the Word of God. Sister Adele brings theological wisdom\, warmth\, and practical pastoral experience\, making her a beloved presenter who challenges participants to deeply connect with their faith and step into their own spiritual growth. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Mother Mary Goemaere\, A California Pioneer
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n175th Anniversary Special Presentation\nMother Mary Goemaere—a California Pioneer: Women’s History & the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael\nPresenter: Sr. Patricia Dougherty\, OP\, PhD with Archivist Jack Doran\nPlus a visit to the Heritage Room\n  \nAs the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael continue to celebrate their 175th Anniversary\, founded just weeks after California achieved statehood in 1850\, we are pleased to present a special program honoring a woman who embodied the pioneering spirit of her age—Mother Mary of the Cross Goemaere\, the congregation’s foundress. \nBorn in Belgium in 1809 during the Napoleonic era\, Mother Mary was formed within the Dominican Monastery of the Cross\, a community founded in 1637 that endured centuries of revolution\, expulsion\, expropriation\, exile\, and wartime displacement. Hers was a formation shaped by resilience\, faith\, and fortitude. That legacy fueled the courage and vision she carried when she answered the call of Bishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany and journeyed to Gold Rush–era California\, bringing with her the social\, spiritual\, and educational foundations that helped stabilize a rapidly emerging society. \nThis program features historian and Dominican scholar Sr. Patricia Dougherty\, whose lifelong research has brought new depth to Mother Mary’s story. Drawing on decades of archival scholarship\, Sr. Patricia reconstructs Mother Mary’s remarkable journey—from her birth in Warneton\, Belgium\, through her formation in France\, to her leadership in nineteenth-century California—illuminating how women religious exercised spiritual authority\, institutional governance\, and social leadership in a male-dominated civic and ecclesial world. Setting the stage for Sister Patty’s talk\, Archivist Jack Doran will discuss the role of an archivist and some of his observations from his time with the congregation. \nThe speaking program will conclude with brief reflections from Sisters Christina Atienza and Cyndie Cammack\, who will look toward the future: What does Mother Mary’s foundation ask of the community today? How can a deeper understanding of this history strengthen the Dominican Sisters’ mission in the present and inspire its continuing work in the years ahead? \nThis special event includes history displays and panels as well as a visit to the Heritage Room with its archival displays of artifacts and ephemera tracing Mother Mary’s transatlantic journey and enduring legacy—and much more! \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand—Befriending Trees: An Exploration
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nOur Befriending Trees program continues during this Season of Creation. We will take time to understand the costs and benefits of different types of trees\, become familiar with Native and Non-Native trees\, and identify invasive species. We may even discover that there are trees that thrive specifically in our Marin environment. \nSr. Margaret Diener\, OP\, will lead the session and bring resources to deepen our understanding. We will have a chance to revisit the variety of trees on the Dominican Sisters property as well as consider those plantings in our own backyards. Hope you can join us! \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Sitting at the Table
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nSitting at the Table\nListening Together to the Spirit \nSaturday\, May 23\, 2026\n8:30 am -1:00 pm \nFacilitated by Sr. Carla Kovack\, OP\nHosted by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael \nThe morning of reflection centers on listening as the doorway to becoming a synodal Church. Reflecting on the Emmaus story and our own experience\, we will use the method of “Conversations in the Spirit” used at the two sessions of the Synod on Synodality. Participants will focus on paragraph 60 of the Final Document\, which addresses the role of women. \nPope Leo says that synodality “is not a campaign. It’s a way of being and a way of being Church. It’s a way of promoting an attitude which begins with learning to listen to one another.” \nThe Pope recalled the value of listening to the Word of God\, listening to one another\, listening to the wisdom we find in men and women\, in members of the Church\, and those searching who might not be members of the Church.

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Friends of the Sisters with Sr. Cathy Murray
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nCeltic Christian Spirituality\nAbout: Celtic Christian Spirituality is a path of silence\, beauty and mystery\, an eco-contemplative experience of God ever present and all about us. As our planet struggles from our excesses\, Celtic spirituality is a way for us to re-engage with the natural world at a fundamental level of profound love and solidarity. Though we are blessed with an abundance of innovations\, we can also be overly plugged in to our devices and out of touch with God and with life as it continues to burst forth and sustain us. At one time\, the Celts were a tribe spread throughout much of Europe and Asia Minor. Due to war with Rome\, they moved north to Ireland\, Brittany\, Wales\, and Scotland. There\, they intermixed with the indigenous megalithic inhabitants of those lands. In the time of the Desert Mothers and Fathers\, Christianity was brought to the Celts\, and the integration of their spirituality with Christianity initially formed what is known as Celtic Christian Spirituality. In our time together we will look briefly at this history\, some basic elements of Celtic Spirituality\, and consider why it is so timely and popular in our world today. \nPresenter\, Sr. Cathy Murray\, OP: Sr. Cathy Murray\, OP\, M.Div.\, LCSW\, brings a rich background in parish and social work ministry. She served for fifteen years as a pastoral associate in Northern California parishes\, where she preached regularly and led adult education programs and retreats. She also ministered as a social work supervisor for Sonoma County and served as Promoter of Social Justice and a member of the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. Today\, Sr. Cathy offers retreats and serves as a counselor\, spiritual director\, and Chaplain for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. \n  \nSchedule of the Day \n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—12:30 pm Presentation \nBring your own water bottle. \n  \nREGISTER

How might pushback work (ours and God’s)\, and how might we learn even from adventures we would rather not have had (at least while in the midst of them)—while appreciating them more later? \nJanuary 5\, 12\, 26 Monday afternoons: 3 – 4:15 pm \nRuth: Suppose we find ourselves in the middle of a set of situations we would never have chosen but can see that there are silver linings to them\, if we can shift our mood or interpretive framework a bit? What’s available? How do these characters show us how a “quarter-turn” works? \nFebruary 2\, 9\, 23 Monday afternoons 3 – 4:15 pm \nRegistration \n\nPlease register online (links below).\nThere is a Zoom option available. Email Sr. Barbara Green (barbara.green@sanrafaelop.org) if you would like links to December recordings.\nFeel free to invite others—please register them or ask them to register.\n\nMonday\, Jan. 5:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/qhxrfm8 \nMonday\, Jan. 12:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/eeafm6v \nMonday\, Jan. 26:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/tdm8nca \nMonday\, Feb. 2:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/dqertjp \nMonday\, Feb. 9:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/mhdykjr \nMonday\, Feb. 23:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/d7kcstu

SUMMARY:The Canticle Experience
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nIn a special collaboration with the Dominican Sisters’ Gather@Grand series\, we bring you The Canticle Experience — an immersive visual-and-musical journey inspired by Saint Francis’s Canticle of the Creatures.\n“An Immersive Sacred Experience” \nAn unforgettable visual and musical journey inspired by the Canticle of Creatures\, one of the most revered masterpieces of global spiritual tradition and the oldest known poem in Italian literature\, authored by Saint Francis of Assisi. \nCelebrating the life of St. Francis\nSt. Francis of Assisi\, 1181 to 1226 — a herald of peace\, simplicity\, and kinship with all creation—composed the Canticle of the Creatures (also called Canticle of the Sun) in Assisi around 1225.\nIn it he praises God through creation—Brother Sun\, Sister Moon\, wind\, fire\, water\, and Sister Mother Earth—later adding lines on forgiveness and “Sister Death.”\nCherished for eight centuries\, it distills Francis’s vision and invites gratitude\, reconciliation\, and care for our common home. \nAn Immersive Visual & Musical Journey\nStep into a luminous\, immersive sensory experience where Saint Francis’s hymn comes alive like never before.\nGuided by the celebrated voice of Friar Alessandro\, with an original score by André Ripa\, this contemplative journey moves verse-by-verse—from Brother Sun to Sister Mother Earth—inviting you to exhale\, belong\, and be renewed. Whether you come seeking peace\, beauty\, or a deeper connection with creation\, you’ll leave with a quiet joy and a gentle call to care for our common home. \nREGISTER
