SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—Be a Voice for Synodality
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eka9weldef49b420 \n The Synod on Synodality is a three-year process of listening and dialogue that began on October 9\, 2021\, and will continue into October 2024 and beyond. Pope Francis challenges us to pursue “ this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey\, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council\, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made\, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion\, to achieve participation\, to open Herself to mission.” The process continues. Pope Francis invites each of us to continue the process in preparation for October 2024. We are inviting you\, our friends to join the Dominican Sisters on March 23 to share your ideas\, visions\, and dreams for church. The day will begin with hospitality at 9:00 am and will continue with conversations in the Spirit and will conclude near 1:00 pm. The Dominican Sisters of San Rafael and the Friends of the Sisters Committee invite you to come and “Be a voice for Synodality.” \n No charge; donations welcome. www.sanrafaelop.org/get-involved/ways-to-give \n Questions? 415.453.8303 or communityrelations@sanrafaelop.org \n REGISTER http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eka9weldef49b420

SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand: Complexities of Color
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n In-Person or via Zoom! \n A special presentation on how whiteness has shaped the humanity of white people and distorted the national promise of liberty\, freedom\, and equal opportunity. \n In this Gather@Grand learn-in/teach-in\, participants and presenters will come to clarity on what it means that whiteness is constructed (rather than natural); that the ascendancy of color-prejudice can be discerned early in the long story of North America (and re-inscribed often); and that the choice to first see and then resist racism can be made. Come away with ideas as to how to respond. The featured guest speaker (via Zoom and shown on the big screen) is Dr. Jacqueline Battalora of St. Xavier University (Chicago). Others who have been active in the various anti-racism programs of Gather@Grand will assist. \n coffee/tea/decaf provided; no charge; \n Kindly register at https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/9ajgrmb

SUMMARY:G@G Lincoln Lectures: The Fiery Trial”—The Evolution of Lincoln’s Thoughts on Race and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n 10:30-noon\n The Gathering Space \n Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n The Fiery Trial”—The Evolution of Lincoln’s Thoughts on Race and Democracy\n Lincoln came of age at a time when Americans’ attitudes on race and slavery were hardening. In the early days of the Republic\, there was hope that these social and economic issues could be solved in time. But as the decades rolled on\, that no longer seemed possible. Lincoln had to overcome a general cultural consensus that African Americans could not live in our country as equals. We will trace the course of Lincoln’s thinking on these knotty problems\, and see how he managed to extricate his mind—to a significant extent at least—from the seemingly hopeless dead end on the subject that the country had come to by 1840.

SUMMARY:G@G Guided Discussion #4 (Option B)
DESCRIPTION:Guided Discussion via Zoom/in-person (Option B) \n REGISTER \n Option B will be different than in past iterations. The group assembling will be guided by a new study of Martin Luther King: To Shape A New World: Essays on the Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, edited by Tommie Shelby and Brandon M. Terry. Terry was interviewed recently by Ezra Klein in a podcast presentation. This set of four in-person or Zoom sessions centering around the podcast and the MLK legacy will invite serious study of these materials\, to help us understand afresh the role of King in the racism and civil rights struggle of his own era\, to investigate what he has to contribute to the present moment\, and to appreciate his contribution to nonviolence and religion-based ethics. We will have the expertise of Klein and Shelby/Terry but will also do our own discussion of their views as well. The basic outcome of the whole study will be 25 or so new and communicable insights regarding MLK on both anti-Black racism and nonviolence in general (theory and practice)\, generated among participants and offered for group consumption. Those who would like to take responsibility to investigate and offer one of these points will be welcomed. \n\nThe sessions will be late in the afternoon on four Mondays (Sept 11\, 25\, Oct 2\, 16: 4-5:30 pm)\n75-minute sessions with participants either present or zooming in.\n\n REGISTER

SUMMARY:G@G Lincoln Lectures: From the Backwoods to the White House
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n 2 lectures! November 1 & 15\, 2023\n 10:30-noon\n The Gathering Space \n Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n Lincoln’s Journey: From the Backwoods to the White House\n In our first talk\, we will discuss the unlikely origins and spiritual/intellectual development of the man who would eventually come to be known as “The Great Emancipator.” How did this poverty-stricken southerner (yes\, the greatest Yankee of them all was raised in Kentucky\, a slave state!) rise above his environment to eventually strike the blow that ended our national curse of slavery.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters: What One Woman Can Do
DESCRIPTION:A Morning of Prayer & Reflection with the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael \n REGISTER \n About: \n Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most important women of the twentieth century. She advocated for social justice and was a “friend of the underdog.” For her\, civil liberties and civil rights were the cornerstones of American democracy; among her causes were women\, Blacks\, youth\, the poor\, and the unemployed. Her life and activity were based on two Biblical quotes: one from the prophet Micah: “What does the Lord require of you?…To love justice\, to act mercifully\, and to walk humbly with your God” and the other from Matthew quoting Jesus: “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren\, you do to me.” This morning session we will delve into what and how Eleanor Roosevelt transformed traditional roles and took on political and reform work. She was the niece of one President Roosevelt and the wife of another. She was also a writer\, columnist\, and public speaker. As a U.S. delegate to the U.N.\, she was responsible for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). \n About the Presenter: \n Sr. M. Patricia Dougherty\, OP is a Dominican Sister of San Rafael and Professor Emerita of History at the Dominican University of California where she received her BA in 1967. She taught elementary school for ten years before earning her MA and Ph.D. in Modern European History at Georgetown University. She began college teaching in 1984 and retired in 1916. She taught a variety of courses on Europe (medieval to present) and women in the U.S. and Europe; she occasionally teaches an OLLI or college class. She has led short travel abroad study trips. Since 1996\, she has co-led a study abroad trip to France for faculty\, staff\, and students from Dominican institutions of higher education. She likes to walk\, practice yoga\, garden\, solve puzzles\, and read. \n   \n Schedule of the Day \n 9:30 am Welcome \n 12:30 pm Closing \n Bring your own water bottle. Snacks will be provided. SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand Film Studies: Whose Streets?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next discussion on Zoom on May 15. \n REGISTER \n Whose Streets? is a film told by the activists and leaders who lived and breathed a movement for justice. Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising that occurred when unarmed teenager Michael Brown was killed by police and left lying in the street for hours. \n It is a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis\, Missouri who have suffered grief\, long-standing racial tensions\, and renewed anger. The murder of Michael Brown brings residents together for prayer vigils and protests. Empowered parents\, artists\, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the National Guard descends on Ferguson\, Missouri with military-grade weaponry\, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance. \n Filmmakers Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis know this story because they are the story. Whose Streets? is a powerful battle cry from a generation fighting\, not for their civil rights\, but for the right to live. \n REGISTER \n DOWNLOAD STUDY GUIDE: Whose Streets.docx

SUMMARY:G@G Relearn U.S. History Session 4—The ‘Jim Crow’ Era in American History—1890 to the 1960s
DESCRIPTION:Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n Register for Session Four: Black Americans and Reconstruction \n Thursday\, December 15 (note change of day) \n 10:30-noon \n The idealism engendered by the Abolitionist movement during the Civil War era did not survive the period of Reconstruction. By the 1880s\, most Americans wanted to forget “the late unpleasantries” and move on with the business of settling the west and building a world-class economy. Consequently\, Southerners were given the green light to regulate their internal affairs as they saw fit\, and consign their Black population to a degraded position in society. The \n Federal Government looked the other way as cities and states throughout the land (and not just in the South) segregated social and political institutions by race\, denied Blacks the franchise\, and reneged on the promise of equality enshrined in the Reconstruction Era constitutional settlement. Additionally\, of course\, Blacks were subjected to appalling extra-legal violence meted out by terrorist groups like the KKK. It was a dark period for American Blacks\, and few whites on either side of the Mason-Dixon Line seemed to care about ameliorating the situation. In this final talk we will look at the various ways white society systematically degraded and humiliated Blacks\, and established what some historians call “herrenvolk democracy”—a political system guaranteeing legal equality for whites while casting African-Americans into outer darkness. \n Register

SUMMARY:G@G Relearn U. S. History—The Founding Fathers on Race and Slavery
DESCRIPTION:Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n REGISTER for Session One: The Founding Fathers on Race and Slavery \n Wednesday\, October 5 \n 10:30-noon \n Gathering Space (1520 Grand Ave; San Rafael) \n It is worth pondering the fact that most of the key leaders of the American Revolution were slaveholders: Washington\, Jefferson\, Madison\, Patrick Henry\, George Mason\, and many others in the “Glorious Cause” owned hundreds of Africans. Even kindly old Benjamin Franklin owned a few slaves\, and acted as a broker for their purchase and sale\, although to his credit he recanted his position late in life\, and became one of the early abolitionists in Pennsylvania. The framers of the Constitution even enshrined slavery in our national compact. This is not to say that these men all felt comfortable with the bizarre juxtaposition of a free republic in which “all men were created equal\,” which yet countenanced the practice of holding human beings as chattel property. We will examine the attitudes and practices of these remarkable statesmen on the touchy—even for them—subject. We will also examine Founders such as John Adams and Alexander Hamilton\, men who despised slavery\, and did what they could to contain the evil before it thoroughly corrupted their beloved republic. \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:G@G Relearn U.S. History—Black Americans and Reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n Register for Session Three: Black Americans and Reconstruction \n Wednesday\, November 30 \n 10:30-noon \n The Civil War may have ended slavery\, but it certainly did not solve the conundrum of race relations in America. Northern “radicals” in Congress—led by men like the fiery Thaddeus Stevens—were determined to use this precious window of opportunity to permanently alter the status of African Americans\, and guarantee them constitutional liberty and equality. Recalcitrant Southerners were just as determined to thwart any substantive change in the racial hierarchy of Old Dixie. The stage was set for a violent and painful showdown between the forces of progress and reaction. (Sound familiar?) We will examine the three key constitutional amendments passed during Reconstruction—the 13th\, 14th\, and 15th amendments—and see how they changed American politics\, at least for a brief period. (Reconstruction ended in 1877 and for nearly a century Blacks were kept in a subservient state embarrassingly close to that which they had endured under slavery.) \n Register

SUMMARY:G@G Relearn U.S. History—The Dred Scott Decision and the Coming of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n REGISTER for Session Two: \n The Dred Scott Decision and the Coming of the Civil War \n Wednesday\, October 19 \n 10:30-noon \n Gathering Space (1520 Grand Ave; San Rafael) \n In 1857 the Supreme Court handed down the most controversial decision in the history of that august body. Chief Justice Roger Taney six of his colleagues ruled that African-Americans were not and could not be citizens of the United States. Their ruling excluding Blacks from the national body politic included free Blacks as well as slaves. (Yes\, there were thousands of free African-Americans on the eve of the Civil War—in some Northern states they could even vote.) The Court also struck down the Missouri Compromise\, a political strategy that had kept slavery out of many of the newly formed states in the west for nearly forty years. The ruling outraged antislavery men and women in the North\, including one Abraham Lincoln. We will dissect this complicated and thorny court ruling\, and see how it placed the country directly on the path to secession and the Civil War. \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters: We Walk the Path Together
DESCRIPTION:About: \n These days we are witnessing increased social division in our national politics\, our churches\, and in our families. Just watching the news creates angst and distress. How do we navigate this\, and how might Zen offer a perspective that could broaden our view? Sr. Pat Farrell\, OP\, will share with us her experience with Zen meditation and teaching\, and how that has deepened her spirituality. The Dominican mystic Meister Eckhart wrote in the 13th/14th century\, “What is today? Eternity!” At the door of Deer Park Monastery\, founded by the late Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh is his quote\, “The Kingdom of God is now or never.” \n About the Presenter: \n Sister Pat is presently the Resident Manager of our Rose Court affordable housing apartments in San Francisco. She has served the congregation as Hosting Manager at Santa Sabina Center\, our retreat center\, and in congregational leadership. She also served the larger family of Dominican sisters in the U.S. as the Executive Director of the Dominican Sisters Conference. Sister Pat is a Zen teacher and enjoys sharing how Zen and Christianity complement each other. \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:BRANCH OUT: Taking Action for Our Common Home
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n   \n You are invited to partner with the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael in exploring and living into our Ladauto Si’ Action Platform. Laudato Si’ is the second encyclical of Pope Francis and includes the subtitle “on care for our common home”. In this challenging address to people of goodwill\, the Pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development\, laments environmental degradation and global warming\, and calls all people of the world to take “swift and unified global action” to counter these effects we did not see coming. \n On October 4\, 2022\, aptly coinciding with the conclusion of the month-long Season of Creation\, the Sisters will host a launch presentation (in person and via Zoom) to share their vision and priorities relative to the Laudato Si’ Action Platform\, and they are looking for partners who also seek to BRANCH OUT. We shall seek inspiration from each other and our environment. Discover how the olive trees on campus can help us in our response to the Pope’s challenge. SUMMARY:G@G Film Discussion—Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a May film discussion and last event before a summer break. \n This film. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks\, is the story of a Black woman whose cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line. Told through the eyes of her daughter\, Deborah Lacks\, the film chronicles her search\, aided by journalist Rebecca Skloot\, to learn about the mother she never knew and to understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Lacks’ cancerous cells in 1951 led to unprecedented medical breakthroughs\, changing countless lives and the face of medicine forever. It’s a story of medical arrogance and triumph\, race\, poverty and deep friendship between the unlikeliest of people. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions\, yet she remains virtually unknown. Rent on Amazon\, Vudu\, or Apple TV. Buy on Apple TV\, Amazon\, YouTube or Vudu. \nLink: https://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/segregated-by-design/ \n STUDY GUIDE: Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Study \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand Film Discussion: Owned and Segregated by Design
DESCRIPTION:Our April discussion in two films: \n Owned: A Tale of Two Americas and Segregated by Design. \n ‘Owned’ is a fever dream vision into the dark history behind the US housing economy. Tracking its overtly racist beginnings to its unbridled commoditization\, the doc exposes a foundational story few Americans understand as their own. \n ‘Segregated’ tells the forgotten history of how our federal\, state\, and local governments unconstitutionally segregated every major metropolitan area in America through law and policy. \nThis month we will be looking into America’s history of segregated housing by watching 2 films. Owned: A Tale of Two Americas is a documentary that takes us into the history behind the US housing economy. This documentary exposes a foundational story that is still affecting Black people today. The one-hour and 23-minute documentary can be rented on Apple TV\, Amazon\, Vudu\, or YouTube. Segregated By Design examines the forgotten history of how our federal\, state\, and local governments unconstitutionally segregated every major metropolitan area in America through law and policy.
