DESCRIPTION:What: Opportunity to engage deeply with the Jewish and Christian processes of repentance\, repair\, and reconciliation in situations where significant wrong has occurred—whether between individuals or between or among larger groups of people. Jewish scholar Moses Maimonides (12th century) will guide us with his insights. \nWho: There are two ways for anyone to participate: more active\, by being part of a small group who meets in person\, discusses and strategizes issues together online\, and is recorded; less active\, by watching the group (live or the later recording) and implementing insights on their own. \nHow: We will read\, study\, and discuss Danya Ruttenberg’s On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World (Boston: Beacon Press\, 2022)\, which explores various situations (smaller to larger\, private to public\, past to recent) where human beings have inflicted and suffered serious wrong at each other’s hands; we will also investigate ways in which amends and healing can happen—or may not. The small “live” group gathered for the sessions will engage together and share insights\, recorded for those who wish to use them “off-line.” \nWhy: to manage past injustices and hurts we have sustained and inflicted in hopes of assisting the healing process. DESCRIPTION:Befriending Trees Befriending & Some Biblical Trees: Reading with Pope Francis’s Integral Ecology Insight \nREGISTER \nLed by Sr. Barbara Green\, OP \nTo reduce Laudato Si’ to a single insight would be to say that the usual firm categories we count on between human creatures and the rest of them (animal\, vegetable\, mineral; plant\, human\, animal) are more porous and fluid than we have been taught by our Western culture and its systems of organization. Those categories have their place and are in no danger of disappearing\, but before those ways of thinking came to dominate\, other ways of organizing beings were not uncommon. The Bible spent 2/3 of its “coming into being” life without assuming the inevitability of those tight edges. \nWe will join Pope Francis (and a number of non-modern Western cultures) and revisit some biblical images and see what we can learn. Invitation: To hear some biblical trees as our near kin and skillful helper; outcomes: how trees help us … what they may ask of us to help them; to include them more as “thou-s” than as “it-s”.
