SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Friends of the Sisters with Sr. Cathy Murray
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nCeltic Christian Spirituality\nAbout: Celtic Christian Spirituality is a path of silence\, beauty and mystery\, an eco-contemplative experience of God ever present and all about us. As our planet struggles from our excesses\, Celtic spirituality is a way for us to re-engage with the natural world at a fundamental level of profound love and solidarity. Though we are blessed with an abundance of innovations\, we can also be overly plugged in to our devices and out of touch with God and with life as it continues to burst forth and sustain us. At one time\, the Celts were a tribe spread throughout much of Europe and Asia Minor. Due to war with Rome\, they moved north to Ireland\, Brittany\, Wales\, and Scotland. There\, they intermixed with the indigenous megalithic inhabitants of those lands. In the time of the Desert Mothers and Fathers\, Christianity was brought to the Celts\, and the integration of their spirituality with Christianity initially formed what is known as Celtic Christian Spirituality. In our time together we will look briefly at this history\, some basic elements of Celtic Spirituality\, and consider why it is so timely and popular in our world today. \nPresenter\, Sr. Cathy Murray\, OP: Sr. Cathy Murray\, OP\, M.Div.\, LCSW\, brings a rich background in parish and social work ministry. She served for fifteen years as a pastoral associate in Northern California parishes\, where she preached regularly and led adult education programs and retreats. She also ministered as a social work supervisor for Sonoma County and served as Promoter of Social Justice and a member of the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. Today\, Sr. Cathy offers retreats and serves as a counselor\, spiritual director\, and Chaplain for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. \n  \nSchedule of the Day \n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—12:30 pm Presentation \nBring your own water bottle. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Taizé Prayer Service
DESCRIPTION:The Dominican Sisters of San Rafael are proud to partner with musicians from the San Francisco Archdiocese to bring a Taizé prayer service to our community. \nJoin us for a Gather@Grand evening of meditation\, song\, and prayer shaped by the distinctive music of Taizé. Rooted in silence\, candlelight\, and stillness\, Taizé prayer invites all into a gentle rhythm of repeated chant and quiet reflection. The simple\, mantra-like refrains are easy to sing and open space for deep listening and contemplation. \nFeaturing live musicians and singers\, this service will be held in a beautiful\, comfortable setting designed to foster peace\, presence\, and communal prayer. All are welcome—no musical experience necessary. \nCome as you are. Rest in the silence. Sing what can be sung. Pray as you are able. \nFriday\, March 20\, 2026\n7:00 pm \nThe Gathering Space\n1520 Grand Ave\, San Rafael\, CA 94901 \nDonations requested\, everyone welcome. \nContact event organizer with any questions: novatopianoschool@gmail.com \nREGISTER: https://form.jotform.com/260355306663153

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Bible Short Stories . . . Scriptured
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Gather@Grand Winter Quarter Series: Bible Short Stories… Scriptured! \nThe stories we will read are in every Bible\, the same words\, but how we understand them can continue to grow and deepen\, including the story of Adam and Eve (December session)\, the story of Jonah (January session)\, and the story of Ruth (February session). \nJonah: Suppose God gives us a life experience we really do not want and are not enjoying\, have even tried to avoid. How might pushback work (ours and God’s)\, and how might we learn even from adventures we would rather not have had (at least while in the midst of them)—while appreciating them more later? \nJanuary 5\, 12\, 26 Monday afternoons: 3 – 4:15 pm \nRuth: Suppose we find ourselves in the middle of a set of situations we would never have chosen but can see that there are silver linings to them\, if we can shift our mood or interpretive framework a bit? What’s available? How do these characters show us how a “quarter-turn” works? \nFebruary 2\, 9\, 23 Monday afternoons 3 – 4:15 pm \nRegistration \n\nPlease register online (links below).\nThere is a Zoom option available. Email Sr. Barbara Green (barbara.green@sanrafaelop.org) if you would like links to December recordings.\nFeel free to invite others—please register them or ask them to register.\n\nMonday\, Jan. 5:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/qhxrfm8 \nMonday\, Jan. 12:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/eeafm6v \nMonday\, Jan. 26:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/tdm8nca \nMonday\, Feb. 2:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/dqertjp \nMonday\, Feb. 9:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/mhdykjr \nMonday\, Feb. 23:\nhttps://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/d7kcstu

SUMMARY:The Canticle Experience
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nIn a special collaboration with the Dominican Sisters’ Gather@Grand series\, we bring you The Canticle Experience — an immersive visual-and-musical journey inspired by Saint Francis’s Canticle of the Creatures.\n“An Immersive Sacred Experience” \nAn unforgettable visual and musical journey inspired by the Canticle of Creatures\, one of the most revered masterpieces of global spiritual tradition and the oldest known poem in Italian literature\, authored by Saint Francis of Assisi. \nCelebrating the life of St. Francis\nSt. Francis of Assisi\, 1181 to 1226 — a herald of peace\, simplicity\, and kinship with all creation—composed the Canticle of the Creatures (also called Canticle of the Sun) in Assisi around 1225.\nIn it he praises God through creation—Brother Sun\, Sister Moon\, wind\, fire\, water\, and Sister Mother Earth—later adding lines on forgiveness and “Sister Death.”\nCherished for eight centuries\, it distills Francis’s vision and invites gratitude\, reconciliation\, and care for our common home. \nAn Immersive Visual & Musical Journey\nStep into a luminous\, immersive sensory experience where Saint Francis’s hymn comes alive like never before.\nGuided by the celebrated voice of Friar Alessandro\, with an original score by André Ripa\, this contemplative journey moves verse-by-verse—from Brother Sun to Sister Mother Earth—inviting you to exhale\, belong\, and be renewed. Whether you come seeking peace\, beauty\, or a deeper connection with creation\, you’ll leave with a quiet joy and a gentle call to care for our common home. \nREGISTER

Our first session begins on December 3\, 2025. \nWhat stories? The stories we will read are in every Bible\, same words.\nBut here’s how we will customize them: \nAdam and Eve (Genesis 1-4): What seems to start well goes badly awry\, and we need to understand what is available to us from a careful\, creative\, and critical consideration of what is actually two stories of these ancestors of us (not just Adam and Eve but their children as well). What are the claims about the origins of all that exists? How to gain insight without needing to attribute shame or blame? \nDecember 3\, 10\, 17 \nWednesday evening: 7 – 8:15 p.m. \nREGISTRATION \n\nRegister for December 17\n\nSAVE THE DATE: \nJonah: Suppose God gives us a life experience we really do not want and are not enjoying\, even have tried to avoid. SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Befriending Trees 11.21.25
DESCRIPTION:Session 6 and final (need not attend all) REGISTER \nWe will learn more about trees and ways to engage with them more intimately\, guided by Pope Francis’s insights about integral ecology. \nWhen/Where \n\n10 am — 12 pm\nThe Gathering Space at 1520 Grand Ave\, San Rafael\, CA 94901\n\nThe Basic Plan \nYou are invited to a set of six discussion/action sessions to learn more about our particular connectivity\, to gain a deeper understanding of trees\, and to engage with some local trees in practical ways—including discovering and marking their common names (for others to appreciate). \nThe regular format will include an hour or so of discussion about trees\, stimulated by our common reading of Peter Wohlleben’s informative and engaging book\, Can You Hear the Trees Talking? (2019) or his Hidden Life of Trees (2016). We will spend some time outdoors on the Convent campus (or perhaps you will do so in your own garden)\, coming to grips with our relationship with these other creatures more nearly and dearly. \nThis engagement will help us know and befriend trees at a deeper level. Our main quest is to better understand and more deeply inhabit the tree-filled world\, the larger universe\, and our human existence amid those spaces. Our practical outcome is to begin to place nametags at the base of trees on the Convent grounds. \nRegistration \n\nPlease register online\nYou need not attend all 6 sessions. Register for the ones you can attend.\nThere is a Zoom option for the discussion portion of the session—not the field work. In-person attendance is preferable.\nFeel free to invite others—please register them or ask them to register.\n\nREGISTER

We will learn more about trees and ways to engage with them more intimately\, guided by Pope Francis’s insights about integral ecology. \nWhen/Where \n\nFridays beginning September 12\, 2025\nSeptember 12\, 26; October 10\, 24; November 7\, 21\n10 am — 12 pm\nThe Gathering Space at 1520 Grand Ave\, San Rafael\, CA 94901\n\nThe Basic Plan \nYou are invited to a set of six discussion/action sessions to learn afresh our particular connectivity\, to know about trees better than we do already\, to engage some local trees in practical ways—including discovering and marking their common names (for others to appreciate). \nThe regular format will include an hour or so of discussion about trees\, stimulated by our common reading of Peter Wohlleben’s basic but informative Can You Hear the Trees Talking? In-person attendance is preferable.\nFeel free to invite others—please register them or ask them to register.\n\nRegister for September 12 here \n

SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—Be a Voice for Synodality
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eka9weldef49b420 \n The Synod on Synodality is a three-year process of listening and dialogue that began on October 9\, 2021\, and will continue into October 2024 and beyond. Pope Francis challenges us to pursue “ this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey\, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council\, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made\, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion\, to achieve participation\, to open Herself to mission.” The process continues. Pope Francis invites each of us to continue the process in preparation for October 2024. We are inviting you\, our friends to join the Dominican Sisters on March 23 to share your ideas\, visions\, and dreams for church. The day will begin with hospitality at 9:00 am and will continue with conversations in the Spirit and will conclude near 1:00 pm. The Dominican Sisters of San Rafael and the Friends of the Sisters Committee invite you to come and “Be a voice for Synodality.” \n No charge; donations welcome. www.sanrafaelop.org/get-involved/ways-to-give \n Questions? 415.453.8303 or communityrelations@sanrafaelop.org \n REGISTER http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=xe47qp4ab&oeidk=a07eka9weldef49b420

SUMMARY:Gather @ Grand: Complexities of Color
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n In-Person or via Zoom! \n A special presentation on how whiteness has shaped the humanity of white people and distorted the national promise of liberty\, freedom\, and equal opportunity. \n In this Gather@Grand learn-in/teach-in\, participants and presenters will come to clarity on what it means that whiteness is constructed (rather than natural); that the ascendancy of color-prejudice can be discerned early in the long story of North America (and re-inscribed often); and that the choice to first see and then resist racism can be made. Come away with ideas as to how to respond. The featured guest speaker (via Zoom and shown on the big screen) is Dr. Jacqueline Battalora of St. Xavier University (Chicago). Others who have been active in the various anti-racism programs of Gather@Grand will assist. \n coffee/tea/decaf provided; no charge; \n Kindly register at https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/9ajgrmb

SUMMARY:G@G Lincoln Lectures: The Fiery Trial”—The Evolution of Lincoln’s Thoughts on Race and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \n 10:30-noon\n The Gathering Space \n Mick Chantler\, Instructor \n The Fiery Trial”—The Evolution of Lincoln’s Thoughts on Race and Democracy\n Lincoln came of age at a time when Americans’ attitudes on race and slavery were hardening. In the early days of the Republic\, there was hope that these social and economic issues could be solved in time. But as the decades rolled on\, that no longer seemed possible. Lincoln had to overcome a general cultural consensus that African Americans could not live in our country as equals. We will trace the course of Lincoln’s thinking on these knotty problems\, and see how he managed to extricate his mind—to a significant extent at least—from the seemingly hopeless dead end on the subject that the country had come to by 1840.

SUMMARY:G@G Guided Discussion #4 (Option B)
DESCRIPTION:Guided Discussion via Zoom/in-person (Option B) \n REGISTER \n Option B will be different than in past iterations. The group assembling will be guided by a new study of Martin Luther King: To Shape A New World: Essays on the Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, edited by Tommie Shelby and Brandon M. Terry. Terry was interviewed recently by Ezra Klein in a podcast presentation. This set of four in-person or Zoom sessions centering around the podcast and the MLK legacy will invite serious study of these materials\, to help us understand afresh the role of King in the racism and civil rights struggle of his own era\, to investigate what he has to contribute to the present moment\, and to appreciate his contribution to nonviolence and religion-based ethics. We will have the expertise of Klein and Shelby/Terry but will also do our own discussion of their views as well. The basic outcome of the whole study will be 25 or so new and communicable insights regarding MLK on both anti-Black racism and nonviolence in general (theory and practice)\, generated among participants and offered for group consumption. Those who would like to take responsibility to investigate and offer one of these points will be welcomed. \n\nThe sessions will be late in the afternoon on four Mondays (Sept 11\, 25\, Oct 2\, 16: 4-5:30 pm)\n75-minute sessions with participants either present or zooming in.\n\n REGISTER
