SUMMARY:Gather@Grand—Friends of the Sisters: The Gospel Truth About Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The Gospel Truth About Christmas: Exploring the Canonical Infancy Accounts\n \nREGISTER \nAbout: The canonical infancy Gospels refer to the accounts of Jesus’s early life found in the New Testament—specifically the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. While the Gospels focus heavily on Jesus’s adult ministry\, death\, and resurrection\, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke offer glimpses into his origins. In this presentation\, we will explore the uniqueness of each account and how these canonical texts bridge the gap between the Hebrew Scriptures and Jesus. We will also explore the distinctive elements of each story. \nWe will look at the theological implications and how they inform and are informed by the rest of the Gospels. By examining these foundational accounts\, we can better establish how the earliest Christian writers understood who Jesus was from the very beginning of his story. \nAbout the Presenter\, Sr. Adele Gerlach\, OP: Sr. Adele Gerlach has been a Dominican Sister of San Rafael since 1955. She has dedicated her life to education  and faith formation. Sr. Adele has served in various ministries\, primarily in education over the last 60 years. She has concentrated her efforts on Adult Faith Formation during the last 30 years. She holds a Master’s in Spirituality from the University of San Francisco. Her burning desire is to share scripture with those who hunger to nourish their lives on the Word of God. Sister Adele brings theological wisdom\, warmth\, and practical pastoral experience\, making her a beloved presenter who challenges participants to deeply connect with their faith and step into their own spiritual growth. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Friends of the Sisters with Sr. Cathy Murray
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nCeltic Christian Spirituality\nAbout: Celtic Christian Spirituality is a path of silence\, beauty and mystery\, an eco-contemplative experience of God ever present and all about us. As our planet struggles from our excesses\, Celtic spirituality is a way for us to re-engage with the natural world at a fundamental level of profound love and solidarity. Though we are blessed with an abundance of innovations\, we can also be overly plugged in to our devices and out of touch with God and with life as it continues to burst forth and sustain us. At one time\, the Celts were a tribe spread throughout much of Europe and Asia Minor. Due to war with Rome\, they moved north to Ireland\, Brittany\, Wales\, and Scotland. There\, they intermixed with the indigenous megalithic inhabitants of those lands. In the time of the Desert Mothers and Fathers\, Christianity was brought to the Celts\, and the integration of their spirituality with Christianity initially formed what is known as Celtic Christian Spirituality. In our time together we will look briefly at this history\, some basic elements of Celtic Spirituality\, and consider why it is so timely and popular in our world today. \nPresenter\, Sr. Cathy Murray\, OP: Sr. Cathy Murray\, OP\, M.Div.\, LCSW\, brings a rich background in parish and social work ministry. She served for fifteen years as a pastoral associate in Northern California parishes\, where she preached regularly and led adult education programs and retreats. She also ministered as a social work supervisor for Sonoma County and served as Promoter of Social Justice and a member of the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. Today\, Sr. Cathy offers retreats and serves as a counselor\, spiritual director\, and Chaplain for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. \n  \nSchedule of the Day \n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—12:30 pm Presentation \nBring your own water bottle. \n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Gather@Grand: Friends of the Sisters with Sr. Christina Atienza
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nWho Do You Say That I Am? An Introduction to Catholic Christology \nABOUT: This introduction to Christology presentation invites participants to deepen their understanding of Jesus Christ in the faith of the Roman Catholic Church. Beginning with prayer and the Gospel question\, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:13-17)\, we will explore the Church’s reflection on the person of Jesus Christ\, drawing from Scripture\, Tradition\, and the Magisterium. The presentation traces the historical and theological development of Christology\, key Church Councils\, and the rejection of heresies to clarify Catholic teaching on Christ’s full divinity and humanity. Approaches such as “from above” and “from below” will be examined\, alongside scriptural portraits\, doctrinal definitions\, and contemporary perspectives from diverse cultures and contexts. The aim is to enrich personal faith\, sharpen theological literacy\, and inspire evangelization\, affirming Jesus Christ as the heart of Christian life and mission. The session will include time for reflection\, dialogue\, and sharing. \nAbout the Presenter: \nSr. Christina Atienza\, OP: Sister Christina serves on the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. She has taught the Christian tradition\, Catholic theology\, and Christology at Santa Clara University and interreligious learning at the Graduate Theological Union and lectured on various topics in religion at Dominican University of California. SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—Spring 2025
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nAbout: So many conversations these days reflect a sense of distress and concern. We find ourselves in one of those tumultuous times in human history. We would like to know the security of solid ground beneath our feet! Yet our faith points us\, not toward certainty\, security\, and safety\, but to developing the ability to stand in the ebb and flow of the tides of life without giving up. In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians\, he writes: “When the day of terror comes\, may you be able to stand your ground\, and after you have done everything\, to stand. We will look at teachings from both Christian and Buddhist traditions that encourage us to experience a grounding that goes beyond our lack of footing. \nAbout the Presenter \nSr. Patricia Farrell\, OP \nSister Pat is presently the Resident Manager of our Rose Court affordable housing apartments in San Francisco. She has served the congregation as Hosting Manager at Santa Sabina Center\, our retreat center\, and in congregational leadership. She also served the larger family of Dominican sisters in the U.S. as the Executive Director of the Dominican Sisters Conference. Sister Pat is a Zen teacher and enjoys sharing how Zen and Christianity complement each other. \nSCHEDULE \n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—1:15 pm Presentation \nBring your own water bottle. SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters—with Sr. Cyndie Cammack
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nLet’s talk about the ‘taboo’ topic of death—including planning for it\, being with others in this time\, resource sharing\, and sharing of stories. Death is a reality in our lives. We all have a terminal disease; it is called life. We are born to live until we die. None of us will get out of this life alive. Bummer huh… Not so fast. Perhaps it is the unknown of it that keeps us from wanting to talk about it. Or the finality of it. Our faith tells us that death in this life is not the end of the story. Since death is an inevitable part of life; let’s plan for it. How can we help someone else? Death is as personal as life – often how someone was in life is how they are in death. We will have resources available to complete needed forms and decision-making guides. \nSCHEDULE\n9:00—9:30 am Registration/Refreshments \n9:30 am—1:15 pm Presentation/Resource Sharing \nBring your own water bottle. Snacks will be provided. No lunch. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nSr. Cyndie Cammack\, OP\, RN\, CNS\, MSN Sr. Cyndie has been a registered nurse for over 35 years. She has worked primarily in the areas of public health\, school health\, case management\, Hospice\, Home Health\, and Palliative Care. She recently left By the Bay Health to become a part of the leadership team for the Dominican Sisters where she spent the last 15 years in Palliative and Hospice Care with forays into Home Health\, also working as a visiting Nurse\, nursing education specialist\, and most recently with their electronic medical record interfacing with all staff in all programs and with the quality department.

SUMMARY:G@G Guided Discussion #1 (Option B)
DESCRIPTION:Guided Discussion via Zoom/in-person (Option B) \n REGISTER \n Option B will be different than in past iterations. The group assembling will be guided by a new study of Martin Luther King: To Shape A New World: Essays on the Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, edited by Tommie Shelby and Brandon M. Terry. Terry was interviewed recently by Ezra Klein in a podcast presentation. This set of four in-person or Zoom sessions centering around the podcast and the MLK legacy will invite serious study of these materials\, to help us understand afresh the role of King in the racism and civil rights struggle of his own era\, to investigate what he has to contribute to the present moment\, and to appreciate his contribution to nonviolence and religion-based ethics. We will have the expertise of Klein and Shelby/Terry but will also do our own discussion of their views as well. The basic outcome of the whole study will be 25 or so new and communicable insights regarding MLK on both anti-Black racism and nonviolence in general (theory and practice)\, generated among participants and offered for group consumption. Those who would like to take responsibility to investigate and offer one of these points will be welcomed. \n\nThe sessions will be late in the afternoon on four Mondays (Sept 11\, 25\, Oct 2\, 16: 4-5:30 pm)\n75-minute sessions with participants either present or zooming in.\n\n REGISTER

SUMMARY:Friends of the Sisters presents: The Power of Grace
DESCRIPTION:Only a few spots remain as of Fri.\, April 1.\nSpace is limited.\nWe are unable to accommodate walk-ins.\nYou must REGISTER. Thank you.\n\n How can we describe the power and impact of grace? Our beloved God chooses to shower us with love each day of our lives. One significant way is through the gift of grace. Patterns of grace happen over and over in our lives. It is a constant movement drawing us closer to trusting God’s plan. During this morning of prayer\, we will look at seven stages of grace as we face some of the difficulties of life. As we proceed through our time together\, let us remember the words of the scripture\, “My grace is enough for you. In your weakness I am strong.” \n About Our Presenter \n Sr. Joan King\, OP has been a Dominican Sister since 1951 and has enjoyed a variety of ministries during those years. \n Sr. Joan spent the first two decades of ministry work in education teaching primarily at the high school level. It was during a sabbatical when she was studying spirituality at the GTU that she was introduced to the concept of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM)\, and the introduction was a profound experience for her. Ever since she has been focused on the process of drawing on the gift and power of the imagination. \n In the early 80s\, she developed a new ministry called Personal Growth Project which was a focus on days of prayer\, retreats\, and connecting spiritual companions. On these retreats\, she trained people in the GIM process with the belief that a steady practice could deepen one’s prayer life\, bring healing\, and create a closer union with God. \n REGISTER ONLINE \n SCHEDULE \n\n 9:30 am Welcome \n 12:30 pm Closing \n Bring your own water bottle. \n Snacks will be provided. It is a constant movement drawing us closer to trusting God’s plan. \n During this morning of prayer\, we will look at seven stages of grace as we face some of the difficulties of life. \n REGISTER \n SCHEDULE \n 9:30 am Welcome \n 12:30 pm Closing \n Bring your own water bottle. \n Snacks will be provided. No lunch. \n \n No charge; donations are welcome. \n Questions? 415.453.8303 or communityrelations@sanrafaelop.org \n *Please bring proof of vaccination to event and wear a mask. Please be flexible with the fluid nature of COVID-19 and protocols.

SUMMARY:Teilhard the Mystic: Exploring the Five Circles of the Divine Milieu
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by Santa Sabina Center and the Friends of the Dominican Sisters\nThis online morning of prayer and reflection focuses on French idealist philosopher and paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin whose life worked bridged the gulf between religion and science and whose mystical insights invite and inspire us even today. Sr. Ruth Droege\, OP\, will lead us in the exploration of Teilhard’s Mystical Milieu through her presentations and dialogue. \nTeilhard’s own experience taught him that “by means of all created things\, the divine assails us\, penetrates us\, and molds us…this world which we are prone to treat with boredom and disrespect…is\, in truth\, a holy place and we did not know it…come\, let us adore.” (The Divine Milieu\, p. 112) \nSr. Ruth Droege\, OP\, before entering the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael\, obtained a Ph.D. in Theology from St. Mary College\, Notre Dame\, Indiana\, in 1953. She taught at Dominican College (now Dominican University of California) until 1984. During that time\, she completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in Berkeley. From 1984 to 2007\, she served as Director of Assessment at Southdown\, New Market in Ontario\, Canada\, an inpatient facility that provided treatment for religious. After retiring to San Rafael\, she has served as co-leader of the Teilhard Learning Group at Santa Sabina Retreat Center since 2016
