We Remember Sr. Marie Molini, OP
Sister Marie Molini, O.P.
Sister Marie Molini, formerly Sister M. Benet, a Dominican Sister of San Rafael for 69 years, died peacefully at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton on October 13, 2017.
Marie was born in Stockton, the third child of Charles Martin Molini and Catherine Barosso Molini. After a visit from the pastor, Father William McGough, Mrs. Molini enrolled all of her children at St. Agnes School. Marie went on to Saint Mary’s High School. During her senior year, when several sisters were ill, the principal asked Marie to go to St. Agnes and fill in. The experience sparked Marie’s vocation to religious life as a Dominican Sister and to the ministry of education.
She entered the convent and began her life as Sister M. Benet. She taught for many years in California: at St. Anne’s in Lodi, St. Dominic’s and St. Rose in San Francisco, at Dominican Convent Lower School in San Rafael, at Annunciation School in Stockton, at Siena High School in Napa, and at her alma mater, Saint Mary’s High School in Stockton.
Her proudest achievement as an educator was in 1978 when she was a presenter at the National Catholic Education Association conference, sharing about Saint Mary’s High School Community Involvement Program, a model for high school student service that was visionary for its time.
In 1996, Sister Marie became the caregiver for her mother and a ten-acre walnut ranch. She became an accomplished agrarian and shared her harvest with friends and other religious. She continued to minister at Saint Mary’s High School until 2014, assisting students seeking financial aid for college or high school, outreach services, and publications editing.
Sister Marie was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Albert, Peter, and Simon. She is survived by her brother, Eugene and her sister, Catherine Camara, several nieces and nephews, and by her Dominican Sisters.
A viewing will take place at Casa Bonita Funeral Home, 2500 Cemetery Lane, Stockton on Wednesday, October 18 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, followed by a vigil service at 7:00 pm. Burial will be private.
Memorial gifts in honor of Sister Marie may be made to the Retirement Fund, Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, Development Office, 1520 Grand Avenue, San Rafael CA 94901.
